A good coach has the power to change the game. But a great coach has the ability to transform a life. Learn how to change lives with TU’s athletic coaching concentration in educational studies.

Tiffin University’s Bachelor of Arts in educational studies offers non-licensure pathways for students to pursue employment in education-related fields, including a specialized track for those interested in becoming an athletic coach. 

The curriculum is transfer-friendly and features a 12-course core focused on sociology, psychology, multicultural communications and introductory education studies.

TU offers a unique program in athletic coaching that prepares ambitious coaches with the necessary professional skills to excel in their work with contemporary athletes. Our students cultivate their strengths through education, explore new skills, and embrace the challenge of self-improvement in order to unleash their full potential and become exceptional coaches for their athletes.

The educational studies program prepares students with a comprehensive understanding of multiculturalism, social inclusivity and their relevance in education. Students are ready for diverse careers in education, with the knowledge and practical applications of psychological theories and principles.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2022), the need for non-licensed educational support staff (such as teacher assistants) is growing at a faster-than-average rate of 9% nationally, and there is an acute need for aides and special education teachers within K-12 schools in Ohio.

The educational studies program also provides streamlined, dual-enrollment pathways into our Master of Education instructional design concentration. While working on their undergraduate degree, students may take up to six hours of graduate coursework that qualify as open electives toward the degree. 

As part of the Expanding Special Education Licensure (ExSEL) grant from the Ohio Department of Higher Education, the Educational Studies program also provides a potential 3+2 pathway to a master’s degree in special education through a partnership with Lourdes University. Students who take this path will both earn a master’s degree and become licensed to teach K-12 mild to moderate special education.

 

Studentswill practice and gain certificates that can prepare them for life in athletics after college. Students may easily obtain more experiential learning through shadowing or working with coaching staff.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

SMG 160 Intro to Sports Management

This course will give the students a fundamental understanding of the career avenues in sport. Industry specialists present an eclectic orientation of the sports field. Academic topics include industry definitions, evolution, curriculum components, experiential learning, career and internship opportunities, applied and theoretical research, leadership, governance and ethics.

 

PSY211 Intro to Sports Psychology

Introduction to Sport Psychology will examine the history and purpose of sports and exercise as well as the fundamental theories and roles of psychology in sports and exercise. This course examines the field of sports psychology, including topics related to performance, motivation, competition, coaching, individual and team-based perspectives, risk and protective factors in sports and exercise and physical and mental health and wellness.

 

SMG220 Principles of Athletic Development

This course explores the physical, psychological, and emotional aspects of development for athletic performance at the youth and interscholastic, recreation and leisure, intercollegiate, professional, and elite level. Issues will also address athlete development influenced by substance abuse, career-transition, and off-field behaviors.
